Paul J ABBOTT (1979- )

Paul J. Abbott is a composer, performer, sound designer, producer and electronica artist based in the North West of England. Also a highly skilled vocalist and clarinetist Paul has performed and recorded throughout the UK. His work as a composer, singer and producer has been broadcast on Radio 3 and Canada Radio, along with a number of performances on the internet.

Paul graduated from the University of York with BA(hons) in Music and MA in Electrocacoustic Composition. He is has recently passed a PhD in Composition with Ambrose Field, also at York.

Acoustic and mixed media works have been performed by Departure Lounge Arts Collective, Juice Vocal Ensemble, Chiasmus Ensemble and in collaboration with Duty Free Dance Company. Installations and sound have been used in their stand alone form and as pre-concert material. A keen collaborator Paul has worked extensively with Kerry Andrew, researching into the value and operational issues around distance collaboration. This has resulted in various works including 'Sedna Stories', 'Turn on the Neon Nightswitch', and 'Shapeshifters (Warbitch)'

For Theatre Paul J Abbott has composed scores for Mary Luckhurst, Mike Cordner and Julia Pascal including 'Attempts on her Life' (Martin Crimp) 'Far Away' and 'Mad Forest' (Caryl Churchill), 'Landscape' (Harold Pinter), 'The Golem' (Pascal)

Alongside numerous private students he has taught extended vocal techniques to students at York St John University and lectured in Electroacoustic Composition at Leeds College of Music.

The main drive of recent compositional output explores the dichotomy between popular music and electronic art music, seeking a balance between artistic relevance set against the inevitable commercialism of the music industry.

Three Left Legacies an album of experimental electronica and interacting styles drawn from his wide range of influences, including electroacoustic, electronica, folk, rock, opera, world and popular musics. It was released on 12 July 2008
